Our Legacy
Founded in 1919, a visionary group of cosmetologists and cosmetics manufacturers, including R.V. Randolph (PA), S.L. Latimer (NY), E.R. Cargel (NY), M. Paris (MA), and B. Tolliver (GA), united to elevate the beauty profession. They recognized the importance of continuous education, innovation, and professional development to provide exceptional service, enhance industry standards, and foster goodwill among beauty professionals.
On October 1, 1919, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, R.V. Randolph organized "The National System Hair Culture League." This effort eventually brought together smaller beauty clubs under a shared mission, and in 1920, the organization was officially incorporated in Delaware as the National Beauty Culturists’ League, Inc.

From our early days in Philadelphia to becoming a national leader in beauty culture, NBCL has shaped the industry through education, networking, and legislative advocacy.
The Meaning of the NBCL Triangle
The triangle is one of the strongest geometric symbols because it represents strength, stability, and unity. Each point depends upon the others. If one side is weakened, the entire structure is affected. Likewise, the success of the National Beauty Culturists' League, Inc. is built upon three foundational principles:
How the Triangle Comes Together
When Perseverance, Fidelity, and Benevolence unite, they form a strong foundation upon which the League stands. These principles connect members from local chapters, through state associations, and ultimately to the national organization.
The triangle points upward, symbolizing growth, excellence, leadership, and reaching higher together.
"Link Up With Us"
The phrase "Link Up With Us" beautifully illustrates the connection between members across the nation. Each state association serves as a vital link in the chain of NBCL. When we link together, we strengthen our collective voice, preserve our history, and expand our influence.
As Historian, you might describe it this way:
"The NBCL emblem tells our story. The triangle of Perseverance, Fidelity, and Benevolence forms the foundation of who we are. These principles unite beauty professionals from state to state and generation to generation. Through perseverance we endure, through fidelity we remain faithful to our mission, and through benevolence we serve others. Together we 'Link Up With Us,' creating a national network of professionals committed to preserving our history, advancing our profession, and building a legacy for those who will follow."
